The Botanical Garden of Coimbra was created in 1772 and integrated in the Museum of Natural History instituted by the academic reform undertaken by the Marquis of Pombal, having been declared property of public interest in 1996. The area of the Garden now covers about 13.5 hectares and includes a large orchid collection created by Finnish Tuulikki and Pekka Ranta.
